Are Chatbots Truly Improving Everyday Life?
2017 is the year chatbots became a household name. Though they burst onto the scene in 2011, this year saw a surge in adoption unlike years prior. And while this popularity is in part due to remarkable advances in technology, we cannot deny the countless ways chatbots are improving everyday life.
What is a chatbot?
Christine Crandell offered an excellent definition in her Forbes article, “Chatbots will be your new best friend.” In her words, a chatbot is a messaging application, sometimes referred to as a conversational interface, designed to simplify complex predefined task(s). That said, conversing with users is not the only thing chatbots do. This technology can be used in stand-alone applications, AI tools, bot developer frameworks and messaging, bot discovery, connectors/shared services, and even analytics. It is no wonder why companies across sectors are using this tool to support their customer success efforts and improve their operations.
Who is interacting with these bots?
You are! While chatbots may sound like complicated, new robots only technology experts can understand, that is not the case. Odd are you have interacted with at least two bots before brushing your teeth this morning. You’ll encounter them in your house, company websites, your smartphone, social media pages, and even online banking apps. Still not sure this is the case? Think Siri, Alexa, and Allo—just to name a few. The list is lengthy.
They’re cool. Sure. But, are chatbots truly improving everyday life?
“Hey Siri, what’s the weather today?”
“Alexa, wake me up at 7am.” “Oh! And remind me to take the trash out at 9pm tomorrow”
Remember the mornings you’d spend waiting on the morning news to announce the forecast for the day? The minutes you spent setting your alarm clock? What about the numerous sticky notes you wrote to remind yourself of random tasks? 5 minutes here. 13 minutes there. Soon it’s lunch time and you haven’t even begun the tasks on your to-do list. Bots allow us to automate routine tasks and get the answers we need in seconds so that we can spend more time doing the things we love. Whether it’s relaxing with family or enjoying a football game, chatbots give us the gift of time. And that is priceless.
